February 2012

It’s hard to believe we’re already planning for Lent—Ash Wednesday is Feb. 22.
Be sure your church’s website is up to date with your Lenten services and events, and even your Holy Week and Easter schedule, posted on or linked directly from the homepage.
Downloadable Spanish and English versions of the 2012 Lenten Meditations from Episcopal Relief & Development are available at Episcopal Relief & Development’s Lenten Resources web page at www.er-d.org/Lent/. Readers can also sign up to receive them by email. Each email will include both the English and Spanish text for that day. This year’s meditations focus on how Christians can work to promote health and fight disease while preparing their own lives for healing during the Lenten season. The English and Spanish devotional booklets, as well as additional Lenten materials such as prayer cards and hope chests, will be shipped from the Episcopal Media Center. Orders should be placed by visiting EpiscopalMarketplace.org, calling 1-866.937-2772 or emailing sales@episcopalmarketplace.org. To ensure delivery by Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26, orders should be placed by Friday, Feb. 10.
The Episcopal Church’s Office of Economic and Environmental Affairs is offering a number of Lenten resources to help us become better stewards of creation, from Eco-Palms for Palm Sunday to the Ecumenical Carbon Fast to a study of Christian Simplicity. Click here for more.
Forward Movement is offering a new and unusual online Lenten study this year: Lent Madness combines learning about the lives of saints with a sports tournament format. Thirty-two saints are placed into a tournament-like single elimination bracket. Each pairing remains open for twenty-four hours and people vote for their favorite saint. Sixteen saints make it to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance to the Round of the Elate Eight; four make it to the Final Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo. If this sounds intriguing, amusing, or just too crazy to be real, you can find complete information (and take a look at the line-up of saints) at www.lentmadness.org.
